Cognitive Impairment Is Greatly Underdiagnosed, Often Not Addressed
Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) can be an early sign of Alzheimer’s disease, but many people who have it don’t know that they do and miss out on preventative measures and treatments that could slow further cognitive decline and lower their Alzheimer’s risk, some recent research has found.
The research involved a study that looked at data from 40 million Medicare beneficiaries who were all age 65 or older. When expected rates of MCI for this age population were compared with actual diagnoses, only about 8% of expected cases were diagnosed in real life.
Forgetfulness is one of the most common signs of MCI, but it often gets dismissed as a normal part of the aging process. Also, many patients don't bring up concerns about memory with their doctor, and physicians can overlook subtle signs of cognitive struggles, leading to missed diagnoses.
“This study is meant to raise awareness of the problem,” said Soeren Mattke, a lead investigator. “We want to say, ‘Pay attention to early changes in cognition, and tell your doctor about them. Ask for an evaluation.’” (For more help + info, see article ‘Key Warning Signs of Mild Cognitive Impairment’ below ↓)
Swapping Red Meat for Nuts/Legumes May Cut Diabetes Risk by 41%
Consuming higher amounts of both processed and unprocessed red meats has been connected in research to a 40-62% greater risk of type 2 diabetes. However, according to a new study, substituting red meat for just one serving of nuts or legumes each day may offset and actually decrease this risk.
The study involved 216,695 adult participants who completed food questionnaires every 2-4 years for a total of around 36 years. The normal intake of red meat was calculated for each participant and any diagnoses of type 2 diabetes were noted throughout the study.
While red meat intake in general corresponded with a higher risk of diabetes, swapping in a single serving of nuts/legumes in place of red meat was linked to a 30% lower type 2 diabetes risk. The results were most pronounced for processed red meat – a 41% reduced risk with a nut/legume swap.
“Plant-based proteins are abundant in vitamins, minerals, and dietary fibers, making them nutritious alternatives to red meat in many ways,” said Xiao Gu, PhD, lead study author. “We currently do not have evidence to show that replacing red meat with refined grains, such as pasta, is good for health.”

Grow Healthy, Full Hair Effortlessly
Biotin is a key nutrient that can be a game changer for healthy-looking hair, skin, and nails.
Unfortunately, it can be challenging for many people – especially plant-based eaters – to consume enough biotin in their diet (it’s found most abundantly in chicken & beef liver) AND many biotin supplements on the market are useless because they are poorly absorbed and get flushed right out of your body. Enter Complete Biotin Plus from Everbella – a top-quality supplement that uses micelle liposomal technology to ensure the biotin is absorbed and utilized effectively. It’s made with a delicious “cinnamon roll” formula that helps to naturally repair thinning hair and is packed with other hair and skin superstars like black cumin seed oil, pumpkin seed oil, and selenium.

10 Amazing Health Benefits of Delicious (But Overlooked!) Hazelnuts
Hazelnuts have a delicious, buttery flavor and texture but remain somewhat overlooked in the nut world (not counting their popularity in sugary spreads and drinks). This is unfortunate because they are a rich source of vitamin E, healthy fats, fiber, protein, and various minerals. Hazelnuts also contain an array of antioxidants that can reduce inflammation and may even improve male fertility when eaten regularly. Plus, they are good for your digestion, brain, heart, skin, AND hair. (More)
Air Pollution May Increase the Risk of Parkinson’s Disease
Air pollution is an often overlooked health threat that is being linked to an increasing number of diseases. Some of the latest research shows that living in an area with higher levels of fine particulate matter – a specific type of air pollutant – could increase the risk of Parkinson’s disease by as much as 56%. Whether other types of air pollution have the same effect remains to be seen, but the study authors hope these findings lead to stricter policies for air purity. (More)
Exercise May Be as Effective as Viagra for Erectile Dysfunction
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common condition estimated to affect nearly half of all men between the ages of 40 and 70. One of the most familiar and commonly used drugs to treat ED is Viagra (sildenafil), but some new research suggests that regular aerobic exercise could be almost as effective. In studies, exercise significantly improved mild, moderate, and severe ED and was considered to be a “low-risk and effective nonpharmacologic therapy.” (More)
Mindfulness Promotes Heart-Healthy Eating Choices
It’s one thing to know that you should be making healthier food choices, but it’s a different matter entirely to actually do it. While there’s no shortcut to a better diet, a recent study did find that a mindfulness-based approach to food can make it easier to make good choices, particularly when it comes to heart-healthy options. To achieve this, participants focused on several aspects of mindfulness like self-awareness, how different foods made them feel, and how their body felt. (More)
7 Important Myths and Facts About Gluten
Gluten has been demonized in recent years with some advocating for its removal from everyone’s diet. However, there are only two groups of people that gluten is “bad” for: those with celiac disease and those who have nonceliac gluten sensitivity (NCGS). For everyone else, gluten adds a source of plant-based protein to the diet. If you do suspect a problem with gluten, keep it in your diet until you can be tested for celiac disease so that the results will be accurate. (More)
